The Doctor of Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) in Systematic Theology is an academic degree conferred only after a student with a basic theological competence in a specialized area of systematic theology has demonstrated ability for further scholarly research and publication. The S.T.D. program consists of a limited number of seminars chosen with a possible dissertation topic in mind, ongoing direction from a faculty adviser, and the preparation and defense of a dissertation that contributes to theological scholarship.  

Degrees

The Doctor of Sacred Theology in Systematic Theology program typically requires at least 36-credit-hour plus dissertation of coursework. 

Here is the curriculum for the Doctor of Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) in Systematic Theology program:

  • Residency Requirements: Four full-time semesters, or two semesters if S.T.L. was completed at ÃÛÌÒÉç.
  • Prerequisites for Admission:
    • S.T.L. degree with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3.
    • Graduate Record Examination or Miller Analogies Test scores.
    • Three recommendation letters.
  • Course Requirements:
    • Four doctoral seminars (12 credits).
    • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
    • Continuous registration for dissertation guidance.
  • Language Requirements:
    • Latin Proficiency Examination.
    • Reading course or examination in Greek.
    • Reading ability in German and a Romance language.
  • Candidacy: Completion of language requirements and at least six credit hours of coursework.
  • Dissertation:
    • Demonstrates contribution to theological research.
    • Approval from director, two readers, area faculty, Ph.D. committee, Dean, and Associate Provost.
    • Oral examination (lectio) and defense.
  • Graduation Requirements:
    • 3.3 average in coursework, lectio, and dissertation defense.
    • Compliance with dissertation format guidelines.
