Baltimore news outlet highlights work in cemetery

Person in a green jacket interviewed on camera

Baltimore's WBAL-11 highlighted the work of anthropology professor Laura Masur at a Bowie, Md. church where hundreds of unmarked burials are believed to belong to enslaved people.

Masur took several dozen University students to Sacred Heart Chapel in Bowie, Md. earlier this year, to clear brush at the parish’s cemetery, which is the final resting place for enslaved, free and White persons.  The students marked potential gravesites with flags for further research. The local and national media, including , , ,, reported on the acts of service.

"It's a tough thing to realize that, when we look at how people are remembered after they die, it's a reflection of how they were seen in life," Masur told WBAL. "What we are doing right now is trying to make sure that the people buried here have some sense of dignity."
